Why not step Back in Time in Hoi An? The charming town of Hoi An, praised for its peaceful atmosphere, its narrow pedestrian streets lined with traditional yellow terrace houses, really does feel like you’re stepping back to another time. There are teahouses, bars, tailors, art galleries and shops galore. Once a major port in Central Vietnam, Hoi An’s enticing riverside setting sees traditional hanging fishing nets, wooden sampans, local fishermen and masses of lanterns and lotus flowers. A short distance away, there are beaches and rice farms to explore. Many choose to get around town on foot or bicycle and a Vietnamese cooking class is an ideal activity with much of the produce coming direct from paddy or sea to plate.
Cruise Halong Bay by Junk Boat Halong Bay, in northern Vietnam is dotted with over 1,600 limestone peaks and islets covering an expansive 1,500 sq km. The towering peaks that junk boats weave their way through have inspired Vietnamese writers and artists for centuries. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, Halong Bay should be at the top of the list for your Southeast Asia adventure.
In ancient Vietnam, Halong literally means, “descending dragon”. Legend tells of brutal invaders from the north, with the Mother Dragon and her children descending to earth to help defend the country with their celestial fire. They scattered emeralds around the bay to form a wall to protect the locals.. After thousands of years, the wall of emerald turned into what we see today – thousands of islets.
Explore the Cu Chi Tunnels If you are after a unique outdoor museum experience, then visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels is a must. Just a short drive from Saigon in Vietnam’s south, this fascinating location is a preserved war museum, providing direct insight into the underground life of the Viet Cong during the war. Around 120km of underground tunnels, trapdoors, living areas, kitchens, storage, hospitals, armouries and command centres are right beneath your feet. Dug with bare hands in the 1940s, they were a refuge to thousands for many years. If you’re brave enough, you can also crawl through some sections yourself.
Try your hand at an Authentic Cooking Class Whether you are on holiday in Vietnam or any other corner of Asia, one of the first things you miss when you return home is the food. You may have found a new favourite dish, or miss the rustic street food. Relive the satisfaction in your own home by learning the lifelong skill of cooking authentic local dishes right at the source. Throughout Southeast Asia you will find cooking classes that teach with local ingredients. Take your Southeast Asia bucket list experience home with you!
See the most stunning sunrise at Angkor Wat One of the most recognisable sites in Southeast Asia, if not the world, is Angkor Wat. Angkor, the UNESCO World Heritage site, contains stunning examples of ancient Khmer architecture dating back to the ninth century. Situated in Siem Reap, Cambodia, Angkor was once the centre of the Khmer Kingdom. Its rising pagodas have been the feature of numerous sunset/sunrise photos, from travellers from all over the world for decades. The gates open before sunrise year-round, giving you a great opportunity to witness the sunrise over Angkor Wat and get that perfect shot. Make sure you book the day before and keep in mind it can be very busy at sunrise. To snap your classic photo of the sunrise, head to the ponds but if you want a less busy spot, head up to Angkor Hill to look down over the complex.
Southeast Asia is a treasure trove of magnificent destinations, striking landscapes and vivacious people. I am certain that a never-ending Southeast Asia bucket list could be created to cover everything that you can do in the region but for now, we hope we’ve given you some food for thought.
